Niche in the kitchen wall: a design element or a functional architectural detail?

To create the most ergonomic environment indoors, designers resort to various tricks. For the greatest functionality of the kitchen, you need to use as many places as possible to store the available utensils. Therefore, furniture is not enough and designers use different niches as storage systems.

The main properties and features of such an architectural element

A wall niche is a groove in the wall that has a decorative or functional purpose. It serves to create an unusual composition and give the room an extra originality. Such a niche can be created both at the design stage of the room and cut out in the wall during the repair.

First of all, a dredging in the wall is an additional space that can be used at your discretion. Most often, a niche is made in a plasterboard partition. Modern niches can not be called simply additional shelves. It is an independent architectural element that is highlighted in color and illumination, and also solves some practical problems.

According to the color scheme, the niche can be contrasting or monotonous with the basic color of the walls. The only recommendation in this area may not be to use dark colors, since then the niche will lose its appeal and look like a through hole in the wall.

The shape of the niche depends on the furniture and the shape of the kitchen itself. If there is a sofa or a wide table, it is better to place the recess horizontally. It will emphasize the general tendency of the arrangement of lines in the room. And if you place it on a short wall, then it is possible to visually extend this surface. The vertical niche will present the missing lightness of cumbersome furniture and will raise the ceiling. Such a recess can be placed near a window or door.

The source of distribution of such architectural methods is rustic style. For him, it was peculiar to equip the shelves in the form of niches in the walls. For today in many popular styles niches are used, as a decorative element.

In country style, a niche in the wall is painted in the same color as the whole wall. Most often, the functional load on this design is minimal and it is simply a decoration of the kitchen.

In contrast to the previous version, the classical style of decorating the kitchen assumes the practical purpose of the niche. In this case, the niche has a rounded shape and is distinguished by a white edging. The interior of the niche is painted in a contrast with the main color of the walls.

In retro style, niches are used to place pictures or photographs. In a retro or classic-style kitchen, the niches are arranged symmetrically with respect to each other. Backlight in this case is a rare element.

Modern styles allow fantasy decorators to clear up. There are no restrictions on shape and color. Niches in the kitchen, decorated in a modern style, can be glazed, painted in an unusual color or placed in an atypical for such an architectural element: under the ceiling, at the floor, asymmetrically.

Lighting a niche in the kitchen wall

Of great importance is the highlight of the niche. It will easily give this decorative element the right shade and can take such a detail to the forefront in the overall kitchen environment.

The backlight can be located both on the top and sides of the recess. During quiet family evenings, a niche can become a source of pleasant muted light. If there are several niches, then it is best to design them in the same style with the help of identical illumination. For the working process, this light will not be enough, so the main luminaire must still be provided.

The game of light and shadow with this backlight will allow the kitchen to look more impressive and hide some of the shortcomings of the repair and furnishings. However, an overabundance of cold fluorescent glow will make the room uncomfortable. It's unpleasant to be in such a kitchen for a long time. It is better if the light is soft and natural shade. A slightly pinkish light will give an intimacy room. This option is suitable for a romantic dinner in the kitchen. The yellow color of the lights is the most natural and will not let your eyes get tired before the time.

If decorative elements are placed in a niche, then a bright highlight will hide some of the color of the decor. At the same time, some materials of gold, silver color or glassware from such illumination will only benefit and will sparkle and pour in the stream of light. In order to emphasize the subject in the niche, spot lighting is suitable. In this case, the lighting for a picture or a photograph should be selected especially carefully. A scattered ray of light gently illuminates the panel, without spoiling its natural appearance with distortion.

Rational use of a niche

Deepening in the kitchen wall can carry both decorative load and functional. The main practical importance for such a deepening is the use of it as a shelf. What will stand on such a shelf depends on the location of the niche and its dimensions.

A large niche can be adapted as a stand for furniture or kitchen appliances. A large space from floor to ceiling, allocated by walls is often supposed to be under the fridge. Some developers, assuming an approximate location of the refrigerator in the kitchen, have in that place a niche of standard sizes. It is convenient to place a television in such a niche. It will be protected from all sides by a wall from the negative impact of the aggressive environment prevailing in the kitchen during cooking. In kitchen furniture, niches are often made for built-in appliances. This allows you to conveniently and compactly place everything in the room, while maintaining a maximum of free space.

You can put several shelves in the recess. This will save on furniture. Most often, this design move is used in the corridor or living room with decorative purposes, but in the kitchen such an element will bring a lot of benefits.

The niche can be used as:

  1. frames for furniture;
  2. instead of cabinets;
  3. for household appliances;
  4. frames for shelves;
  5. frames for sanitary equipment;
  6. Shelves for decorative objects and paintings;
  7. supports for domestic plants;
  8. bar counter.

Of course, do not expect that the niche will be as functional as a rack or built-in closet. Deepening in the wall can not replace a full-fledged kitchen furniture, but to neglect the possibilities of compact storage is not worth it.
